About J. Riley Stewart
J. Riley Stewart creates photographs of romantic landscapes that compel a sense of presence and participation by the viewer. They invite the viewer to immerse themselves in the scene, to stay awhile, to discover, and just enjoy the minutes. Stewart takes his inspiration from past artists who mastered the use of dramatic lighting to tell visual stories, especially those of the romantic and American illuminist movements.
His interest in historic architecture makes it a favorite subject: old ruins, gristmills, churches, stone bridges, grand old barns, and other man-made objects lying in their natural landscape always catch his eye. To him, these artifacts are art forms in their own right: someone “way back when” used his/her skill to make something beautiful. Such subjects tells us a lot about the people and cultures who created them.
J. Riley Stewart is a self-taught photographer who has been creating images of romantic landscapes for over 35 years. He works primarily with medium and large-format film to capture his scenes. His artistic techniques are selected to evoke a sense of great depth and realism that invite intrigue and engagement. Artistic interpretation includes cropping, lighting modifications, and careful use of filters to enhance the story behind his subjects. His artwork is exhibited in a number of private and corporate collections in the USA. Having a passion for preserving the Virginia rural landscape, he routinely contributes to publications of the Mosby Heritage Area Association and has had his images published in several editions of regional media.
