GW’s Teachers in Industry Project provides insight into demands of the 21st-century work environment. During the three-week long program, the 19 local high school teachers attended externships at local businesses partnering with the program and looked for ways to better prepare their students for future careers in industry.

The GO GIRL (Genomic Opportunities for Girls In Research Labs™) educational outreach program, recently held on campus June 17-20, 2014, is designed to provide hands-on laboratory experience in molecular biology and genomics to rising 10th, 11th and 12th grade young women enrolled in Loudoun County Public Schools (LCPS). The girls have the opportunity to explore laboratory techniques commonly used in forensic and research laboratories using state-of-the-art research facilities at GW.

GW School of Nursing is committed to community service and supporting the nursing profession. As part of this, the SON Skills and Simulation Lab often hosts various groups. Most recently, the SON sim lab hosted a group of students from the Loudoun County School of Practical Nursing (LSPN) at C.S. Monroe Technology Center-the Loudoun Governor's Career and Technical STEM Academy.

Students launched ping pong balls across the room while participating in one of the 12 workshops at the eighth annual Science, Technology and Engineering (STE) Day at the George Washington University Virginia Science and Technology Campus (VSTC). The campus hosted 130 students from 11 Loudoun County high schools. The VSTC campus also welcomed Virginia Secretary of Education Anne Holton, who spoke to the students on the importance of science, technology and engineering education.

GW’s Computational Biology Institute (CBI) has been awarded a grant by the Virginia Innovation Partnership to accelerate innovation and economic growth in Virginia for their proposal “Next Generation Diagnostics.” CBI plans to commercialize new methods of pathogen diagnostics using a novel combination of genomics and informatics.

Young and inexperienced drivers are at higher risk for collisions. Dr. Samer H. Hamdar, an assistant professor in GW’s School of Engineering and Applied Science and director of the Traffic and Networks Research Laboratory, hopes to create a safer driving environment, especially for these young and inexperienced drivers, by applying his research in collision prediction and vehicular control to develop a hazard-based driving behavioral model.
