GW Hosts Discussion on Health Information, Big Data and Quality of Care

EVENT: The George Washington University Virginia Science and Technology Campus (VSTC) and School of Nursing (SON) will co-host “Health Information, Big Data and Quality of Care.” The discussion features Judy Murphy, deputy national coordinator for programs and policy at the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT, Department of Health and Human Services in Washington, D.C.
Ms. Murphy and SON Dean Jean Johnson will discuss how big data may affect health care delivery, evidence-based practice, quality improvement and research; and how electronic health records are changing health care delivery workflow and patient-centered care. They will also discuss possible big data sources—such as home health monitoring, social media and mobile apps—and the potential uses of the data and how it may affect patient-provider relationships.
The discussion will include questions from the audience.

BACKGROUND: This event is co-hosted by the VSTC and SON deans. It is the first event of the School of Nursing’s policy series hosted by Dr. Johnson and the third installment of the GW VSTC Dean’s Speaker Series hosted by Dean Ali Eskandarian
The VSTC Dean’s Speaker Series, which began in fall 2012, brings leaders and experts together with students, faculty, alumni and community members to encourage discussions on global challenges and opportunities in society. Previously, VSTC hosted discussions on information security and the role of national laboratories in the critical function of national security and technical innovation.
