Publications, conferences, grants and other news regarding VSTC faculty from the May 2013 VSTC Newsletter.

Conferences & Presentations:

Prof. Michael Plesniak (MAE chair) presented an invited seminar titled "Human Phonation: Fluid Dynamics of the Vocal Tract" as part of the Distinguished Leaders in Engineering series, held on April 24 in the Department of Mechanical, Aerospace and Nuclear Engineering at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

Prof. Philippe Bardet (MAE) gave a seminar titled “Micro-physics of Air Entrainment on Free Surfaces” at the Center for Environmental and Fluid Mechanics at the Johns Hopkins University on March 1.

Prof. Philippe Bardet (MAE) gave a seminar titled “Micro-physics of Air Entrainment on Free Surfaces” at Pennsylvania State University’s Department of Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering on February 21.

On February 26, Prof. Chunlei Liang (MAE) gave a talk at the SIAM Computational Science and Engineering conference, held in Reno, NV. The title of his talk was "Simulation of an Oscillating Wing Power Generator Using an Efficient High-order Method." Prof. Liang’s doctoral student, Bin Zhang, was involved in this work.

Advances In Engineering has invited Prof. Michael Plesniak (MAE) to feature online an article that he published recently with his former graduate student, Stephane Poussou. The article, “Vortex dynamics and scalar transport in the wake of a bluff body driven through a steady recirculating flow,” is available to the wider engineering community on the Advances In Engineering website.

Honors & Awards:

The second place award at GW’s School of Engineering and Applied Science’s annual Student Research and Development Showcase worth $4,000, went to Mohammadreza Ghahremani and Hatem El Bidweihy, of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, for their exploration of an energy-efficient and environmentally friendly magnetic refrigeration system. Their advisers are Professors Edward Della Torre and Lawrence Bennett.  MORE

Prof. Tarek El-Ghazawi (ECE) has been awarded the Humboldt Research Award, a prestigious international research award given by the Alexander Humboldt Foundation in Germany. The award is made every year to 100 scientists across the world in all areas. It is granted to academics whose fundamental discoveries, new theories, or insights have had a significant impact on their own discipline and who are expected to continue producing cutting-edge achievements in the future. The Humboldt Award includes a cash award and an invitation to collaborate with German scientists. As part of his award, Prof. El-Ghazawi will collaborate with Prof. Juergen Becker, former vice president for Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and current head of the Institut für Technik der Informationsverarbeitung at KIT, and his team.

Research:

Prof. Philippe Bardet (MAE) was awarded the Office of Naval Research summer faculty research program. He will work at the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division.
