Ashburn, VA (Jan. 5, 2010) Jazz musicians, literary figures, artists, and politicians take a good needling from regional artist Mike Caplanis in the exhibit, Pens & Needles, now open to the public at The George Washington University Virginia Science and Technology Campus through March 5.

An artist reception is open to the public on Friday, Jan. 22, from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the Enterprise Hall First Floor Gallery.

Caplanis began drawing caricatures of civil war generals and statesmen which were later published in the 1999 book Drawn to the Civil War, John F. Blair, publisher. Many caricatures followed and continue to spring from his imagination. His drawings skewer players from history and politics, literature and science, the living and the dead, the good and the bad. His work has been exhibited in the L Ross gallery in Memphis, Tennessee and locally in Gallery 222 in Leesburg.

The Regional Artist Series is the result of a partnership between the GW Virginia Science and Technology Campus and Gallery 222/Loudoun Academy of the Arts Foundation to bring artists and artwork of exceptional quality to the greater Loudoun community.

The GW Virginia Science and Technology Campus was established in Loudoun County in 1991 as a center for innovative research, graduate education, and regional corporate partnerships. The Campus hosts a dozen centers of excellence in critical areas such as energy science and technology, transportation safety, and high performance computing.
