Dr. Penrose "Parney" Albright, Director of the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, served as the inaugural speaker of the Dean's Speaker Series on Nov. 7, 2012. The Series, hosted by Dr. Ali Eskandarian, brings leaders and experts together with students, faculty, alumni and the community to facilitate discussions on the challenges and opportunities of a global society. Dr. Albright's presentation, National Laboratories and Their Role in National Security, can be viewed on YouTube.

The 15-credit graduate certificate in justice and public safety information management will be offered in partnership with the IJIS Institute.
The program will provide a comprehensive and strategic understanding of policy, best practices and strategies related to information technology and data management. The program will help students gain an understanding of the challenges and contemporary solutions related to information sharing and safeguarding information, and allow them to apply that knowledge to justice and public safety fields. The program will be offered online and one weekend per month at GW's Virginia Science & Technology Campus in Ashburn. MORE

Diana L. Burley, GW professor of human and organizational learning, has been appointed to the 2012 JCOTS Cyber Security Committee. JCOTS, created by the Virginia General Assembly in 1997, is the Virginia Joint Commission on Technology & Science. It is a permanent legislative commission charged with studying and promoting all aspects of technology and science in the Commonwealth of Virginia through sound public policies.

Through a long-standing partnership with Loudoun County Public Schools (LCPS), the university is proud to exhibit local student artwork. Through Feb. 19 artwork from Lucketts Elementary School and Tuscarora High School are on display. The next exhibit featuring artwork from Balls Bluff and Francis Hazel Reid Elementary Schools will open on Feb. 21.

After power production, cement production is the largest single contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. Researchers will examine the use of a green electrochemical process to form cement and other useful materials without producing CO2 gas emissions. MORE

Stuart Licht, a George Washington University professor of chemistry at the Virginia Science and Technology Campus, has received a $1.7 million grant to continue to study "solar cement."
The grant-funded by the National Science Foundation Sustainable Energy Pathways Program, under the umbrella of the NSF Science, Engineering and Education for Sustainability initiative-allows Dr. Licht and a team of GW researchers to examine the use of a green electrochemical process to form cement without CO2 gases. GW’s pharmacogenomics program explores fashioning individualized drug therapies. It wasn’t long ago when the idea of tailoring drug therapy based on a patient’s genetic makeup or distinguishing which drug might be most effective in battling a person’s cancer would be relegated to the pages of a science fiction novel. But today, it’s called science. Pharmacogenomics (PGx) to be exact. The marriage of pharmacology and genetics is a union that spawns research aimed at personalizing drug therapies and being able to predict drug responses based on a patient’s genetic makeup. MORE

The origin of Cerataspis monstrosa has been a mystery as deep as the ocean waters it hails from for more than 180 years. For nearly two centuries, researchers have tried to track down the larva that has shown up in the guts of other fish over time but found no adult counterpart. Until now. GW Biology Professor Keith Crandall cracked the code to the elusive crustacean's DNA this summer.

GW’s Teachers in Industry Project participants learned skills from area business leaders to bring back to their classrooms. Although George Washington’s Teachers in Industry Project occurred during the month of July, the knowledge participants have gained is just about to start its journey through area middle and high school classrooms.

A new blended-learning format gives more flexibility to students. It takes GW nursing student Brittany Wilson about an hour to drive from her home in Manassas, Va. to GW’s School of Nursing (SON) on the Virginia Science and Technology Campus. Now, thanks to a $655,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Health Resources and Services Administration, Ms. Wilson gets to stay home once a month in her pajamas and watch a recorded lecture online instead of driving to campus and attending class in-person.

Computational biology is a field that brings together elements of computer science and biology. It is where big data intersects with science and where much of biology can be described by mathematical equations. Computational biologists conduct bench research and develop tools to effectively analyze the huge volumes of data generated in researching genetics and genomics, including genetic mapping and DNA sequencing.
